Volcanic Eruption White Island 2024. The uninhabited whakaari/white island is the 2 x 2.4 km emergent summit of a 16 x 18 km submarine volcano in the bay of plenty about 50 km offshore of north island. Once a popular tourist destination, it has been off limits since 2019, when a massive eruption of ash and steam killed 22 people who were visiting the island as part of a cruise.
Nz scientists detected a new vent on whakaari white island last week, which has been experiencing a minor eruption and was emitting an increase in volcanic ash. The volcanic alert level for whakaari was raised to level 3 on 9 august 2024, and since then the volcano has experienced ongoing minor eruptive activity including ash.
